Efficient EAF slag door cleaning and slag level control system

The system is designed for modern EAF operation.  It prevents any scrap falling to furnace breast,  enables fully closed door operation with automatic door cleaning and foaming  slag level control. It is designed to maintain the thick slag layer in the furnace to improve arc coverage, slag additives efficiency and reduce energy consumption

System operation

 
The door is mounted close to the hot side of the furnace. Face of the door is practically at the same level as face of water cooled panels. This avoids slag door tunnel and since door is closed during charging, it prevents any scrap falling to the furnace breast. The burner integrated in the door operates with efficiency equal to sidewall burner panel position due to proximity to the scrap and steep burner angle. This combination ensures uniform melting and prevents accumulation of cold scrap behind the door without use of slag door lance or mechanical pusher. During flat bath operation the slag door controls slag level in the furnace as design permits closing the door against flowing slag to stop deslaging without furnace tilt. This enables to build up and control large layer of foaming slag which is maintained inside the furnace as long as it is needed.
Large foaming slag layer improves heat transfer to the bath as well as increase yield of scrap and slag additives.
